Switching Over To CNC

by Ramona Lawrence

Machining using computer numerical control (CNC) has really revolutionized the production world. However, not everyone has switched over to using these services. If you're just now looking at CNC machining to have products made, you'll find it carries a lot of benefits.

Faster Productivity Means More Business

One of the advantages of CNC machining is that it is so much faster than non-CNC work. Now, how quickly you get items back from the CNC service depends on their particular way of handling the workflow. But you could find that you're getting things back very quickly, and that means your turnaround time for customers could be faster as well. Try to forecast how much more business you could get if you could reduce your production time.

You'll Have to Adjust Your Own Facility's Time Frames

As mentioned, with CNC machining, you could start getting products back much more quickly. CNC machining requires less time to complete, especially for larger orders, which means you'll be ready to sell or ship out your products sooner. You won't really have to change any procedures. But now you'll be ready to use the parts in your products sooner, and that means potentially changing when you place orders for supplies or arrange for scheduled pickups by a shipping company. What you want to avoid is having a huge backstock of these CNC-machined parts while you wait for another supplier to bring over more of what they have to complete the products you sell. You'd want to adjust when that supplier was due to send you items so that you could finish your work.

Ask About Non-CNC Work

When you make the switch to using CNC machining, you'll get great results if the material you have can be machined using CNC. If you have wood, however, or another material that doesn't work with CNC, you'll obviously need to find a service that offers non-CNC skills. This could very well be the same company you're sending out your CNC materials to. It can save you time if you ask them about non-CNC options when arranging for CNC work, even if you have no non-CNC work coming up. If they can't help you, they may know someone who can.

When you switch over to having your products created via CNC machining, you'll find your business speeds up and your products look and work very well. Adjustments on your part will be minimal, and you'll be glad you made the change.
